Dear Students, Families, and Staff,

As you may be aware, Rocky Hill recently lost Fire Captain James Lamarre, who died in the line of duty as a result of work-related cancer. Captain Lamarre honorably served the Rocky Hill Fire Department for twenty-seven years. He was a lifelong resident of our town and a graduate of Rocky Hill High School. Captain Lamarre was also a veteran of the United States Army and he served as the chaplain for Benino-Beck VFW Post 2138 in Rocky Hill.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, March 18, 2022, at St. James Church in Rocky Hill. The school district leadership team has been advised by the Rocky Hill Police Department to anticipate a significantly higher than normal volume of traffic during the middle of the day in certain sections of town, causing traffic congestion and creating the potential for road closures. Given the fact that the timing of the services coincides with our planned early dismissal day for students, I have determined that it would be best to reschedule Friday, March 18, 2022, as a full day for students. Accordingly, we will follow the regular dismissal schedule on March 18 and reschedule the early dismissal day for Friday, April 8, 2022, (in advance of the April vacation). The regular dismissal on March 18 will ensure that our high school’s student drivers, our school buses, and the parents and guardians who drive to pick up students will be able to avoid any traffic issues which develop during the middle of the day.

I understand that this decision may cause a disruption for some families who have already made plans in anticipation of the early release. To that end, we will certainly work to accommodate any parents or guardians who need to pick up a child prior to the close of school on March 18. In addition, the school calendar on our district’s website will be updated to reflect the following:

Friday, March 18, 2022: Full Day for Students

Friday, April 8, 2022: Early Dismissal Day for Students (Staff Professional Development)

Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. On behalf of the Board of Education and the Rocky Hill Public Schools, we honor Captain Lamarre’s loyal and dedicated service to his community and his country, and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues in the Rocky Hill Fire Department and Benino-Beck VFW Post 2138.

Respectfully,

Mark Zito, Ed.D

Superintendent of Schools
